urolift® SYSTEM FAQs

What is the UroLift System?

The UroLift System is an FDA approved, minimally invasive treatment for BPH. During the UroLift procedure, implants are put in place during a transurethral outpatient procedure that can be done in the physician’s office under local anesthesia. These implants are used to hold the enlarged prostate out of the way to relieve the obstruction symptoms.

The UroLift Procedure is safe, straightforward and will allow urine to flow normally again without cutting, heating, or removing tissue. Patients who receive the UroLift procedure can expect to experience a rapid improvement in their quality of life. Clinical data has shown that patients report lasting improvement in their symptoms and flow rate without compromising sexual function.

What is BPH?

BPH, also known as “benign prostatic hyperplasia”, is when a benign prostate becomes enlarged. This is very common and the enlargement of the prostate occurs slowly as men get older. As the prostate enlarges it begins to press against and constrict the urethra. This leads to the bladder walls becoming thicker and causing the bladder to weaken and lose its ability to empty. The narrowing of the urethra and the inability to empty the bladder completely are the main causes of BPH symptoms.

BPH may also be called benign enlargement of the prostate (BEP, BPE), adenofibromyomatous hyperplasia, benign prostatic hypertrophy, or benign prostatic obstruction.

I Think I May Have BPH: What are the Symptoms?

The main symptom of BPH is the frequent need to urinate but some other symptoms include:

  • Feeling a full bladder even after urinating
  • Feeling the urgent and sudden need to urinate
  • Weak urine stream
  • Stopping and starting while urinating
  • Trouble beginning to urinate
  • Straining during urination

In an emergency situation, you may not be able to urinate at all and immediate action is required.

How long does the UroLift® procedure take?

The UroLift® System is a breakthrough minimally invasive treatment that typically takes less than an hour and can offer multiple benefits for men with prostate enlargement.

What is the expected UroLift® recovery time?

After treatment, patients typically go home the same day without a catheter. There is minimal downtime post-treatment and many patients experience symptom relief in as early as 2 weeks.

How does UroLift® compare to other BPH treatment options?

UroLift® is a safe and effective treatment for symptoms related to BPH. Its risk profile is better than most traditional surgical options, and patients report symptom relief better than reported with medications.4

Will UroLift® cause erectile dysfunction?

In the large, pivotal study on the UroLift® System, there were no instances of new, sustained erectile dysfunction or ejaculatory dysfunction.4 The same cannot always be said of other BPH therapies such as TURP, laser, and even medication.

What is the success rate of UroLift®?

The Implants are intended to be permanent. The implant is made up of standard surgical implantable materials. If ever needed, your doctor can remove the urethral implant. The suture can be cut and the urethral end piece can be retrieved with a standard grasper. The capsular tab will remain in place inside the body.

Are there any UroLift® treatment side effects?

The most common side effects reported in clinical studies were mild to moderate and include pain or burning with urination, blood in the urine, pelvic pain, urgent need to urinate, and/or the inability to control the urge to urinate. Most symptoms did resolve within two to four weeks after having a UroLift® procedure.4

Is UroLift® covered by Medicare? What does UroLift® cost?

Yes! The UroLift® System treatment is covered by Medicare and many private insurers. Contact your insurance provider for your specific coverage information.
